I got asked about this a lot. I mean A LOT. Like how do you study... how can you study just a bit but manage to score exams... I never saw you study but you still pass exam... my brother asked, my friends, classmates...
1st to answer the question I did study. There's no way someone who never study can pass biology believe me. Maths, languages maybe can but not biology. This thing needs a lot of reading.
As to how.. As an anonymous saying goes "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail".
Good study is as much as good in planning it.
1. Plan your study
2. Know your limits
3. Determination
4. Consistent
1st, determination is what drives people study, why people study. Ask yourself, "should I study tonight?" "why do I have to excel my exams?" "Do I want to pass exams so badly?". Determination is the engine that start off the study machine inside you. How strong it is will make it how hard will your study. So first of all, set your mind why you need to study, some people because they want to make their parents proud, some guys just want to show off to girls, some just cant stand the competition, some aim to further study abroad or achieving their dreams. Whatever they are, if your determination is not strong enough then just forget your aims and dreams and start making plan B because you really doesn't care if you reach it or not. Or else you will be studying hard for it
2nd, know your limits. Our brains are no machine. They have capacity and limited supply of ATPs. If you study too much without rest eventually run out of energy and then whatever you try to put wont go in. Average people have a real focus of only 45 minutes. Some less and some more. After that your mind will no longer focus and you are just end up reading something you wont remember- to no avail. If I draw a graph to see the percentages a brain can absorb over time it will be sloping down. So, take it from me- study for a short time then take break, have enough rest and then continue again. Maybe like every study 40minutes take 10 and continue 40. It just an example anyway.
3rd, plan your study. Sub part- time and topics. Say you plan to study every night 9 to 11, you must heretofore know what you want to study. What topics I need to finish by today, or how many past year question sets I must done. It be better if you already plan ahead for weeks or months. Example by this week I must finish the entire chapter of photosynthesis.
4th, consistent. Its better to study one hour everyday than 12 hours per day but only 2weeks before exam. 1hour is not even a long time, everyone can do it.. again-determination. When studying all that matter is the output, even if it unsubstantial. In the end, it is what did you get today. As long as you being persistent, you will remember. When reading, there is difference of 1st reading, 2nd reading and the consecutive... to talk about that will be long. But I guess what everyone agree on is you remember more if you repeat reading same thing.
I don't need to talk about understanding what you read because.. obviously understanding something makes it easier than trying to memorise something you don't understand. Analogy- its easier to remember table of 5 (5,10,15,20,25,,,) because you can count it after 5x1 is 5x2 so on than to memorise random sets of numbers (79345198375).
Minor thing- environment. It is varies in people. Some may like to study in library some prefer alone in the room. Whatever your preferences you should know and stick by it. Don't go to library if it annoys you, you don't really need library to study if you have enough of your own books. Me? as weird as it may sound, I like to study in my room alone with loud musics. Musics help neutralise my boredom thus keep me going.
The details- when to make notes, sidebook notes, how to do exercises correctly, underlining key words, how is 1st read from textbook differ from 2nd read... I guess there is no need of me to tell that, if anybody wants me to they can ask but for now I guess its long enough..
I don't know how much this will help people who read it, any questions can ask me. Best of hope everyone study smart.
